FAQ

You have a question and we might have an answer!

Questions and Answers

  • Do you offer other sailing certifications besides ASA? No

  • How do I get an ASA membership and what is the cost?  Go to the ASA website https://americansailing.com/ and signup for a new profile and purchase an ASA membership.  You do not need any qualifications to purchase a membership.

  • Where do I buy my textbooks?  Through the ASA website, they have both physical books that will be mailed or electronic versions.

  • What is involved with a sail certification?  Most courses required a written test and a practical on water test.  Both tests are completed during the liveaboard.

  • Do you provide course theory training prior to the course?  Yes, and the amount will vary depending on which course you are studying. We host virtual learning sessions to review key concepts and address any questions students have.  A certain amount of self-study is required using ASA textbooks, ASA learning applications and online sailing reference material.  Each student will receive a checklist of required material and reading that they will complete prior to virtual sessions and the liveaboard course.

  • What does a typical day look like when on the boat? After an early breakfast we typically “ready” the boat and sail to a new destination.  Ideally, we arrive early afternoon at a new port.  Once the boat is secured for the night, we will complete “classroom” time on the boat.  Each day usually includes several hours to explore the area, swim, hike, bike or rest.

  • What do we eat?  All meals are prepared and eaten on the sailboat.  Modern sailboats have well equipped kitchens with fridges, freezers, stoves, bbq, and dining areas.  We only train using modern current sailboats that are designed for coastal and offshore sailing.

  • Will we be doing offshore passages?  No unless you are taking the ASA offshore passage course.  All our training is done in coastal areas almost always in sight of land.
